The Ukulele Project!
What is The Ukulele Project?
We are thrilled to share The Ukulele Project, which we began in Panajachel, Guatemala, in 2020 and expanded to Costa Rica in 2022. Our goal is to connect the world through travel, music and human kindness one person at a time.
This project is all about creating hope! Our next project will take place March 14-23, 2023, in Guatemala, where we will continue to bring the gift of music to underprivileged communities.
This year, we are blessed to expand the project to include FREE workshops for the women of Guatemala, including an entrepreneurial hot seat, self-defence workshops, a computer workshop, and gifting ukuleles!
One very special part of this project is to provide micro-loans to THREE indigenous Mayan women so that they can start/expand their small businesses. In doing so, we will be giving them a chance to change their family’s circumstances and community! But we can’t do it without you! If you would like to be a part of this mission of hope project, please donate to www.fundamaya.org, a non-profit organization we will be working with.
The Ukulele Project Panajachel, Guatemala 2020
What is The Ukulele Project?
We are so thrilled to share The Ukulele Project Panajachel, Guatemala with the world! It is our hope that in the future, this project will expand to include other parts of the world. Our goal is to connect the world though travel, music and human kindness one person at a time.
The Ukulele Project, our family, visited Panajachel, Guatemala February 28 – March 9th, 2020. We donated Ukuleles and percussion instruments to 3 of the local preschools there. I cannot express how excited and happy we are to be able to share our love of music with these Mayan Families!
During our stay, we shared a friendship song that we wrote for them called “Hola Guatemala”. Our family has been passionately working at learning Spanish as well as preparing Ukulele lessons for the children. We will also share our music with their Elderly Care Program by having the children perform for them at the end of our stay!
Why Panajachel, Guatemala?
Hunger and poverty are not the only challenges in this part of the world. Here in Canada, we take Education for granted but in places like Guatemala almost 50% of the population do not attend school past Grade 6. Almost 70% of those who go on to continue their education don’t complete high school.
We would like to encourage the families that are fortunate to have children attending school to have fun, learn a new skill and experience the arts.

Why are we doing this?
We know that music is healing and can change lives! The impact that music has on the soul and within our spirits has no limits. The gift of music is one that keeps on giving. It helps to celebrate life’s wins while also healing life’s lows. Sharing our joy and love of music with these Mayan families is going to be amazing.
Furthermore, we want to reach out to them and teach them how to play songs on the Ukulele. Our hope is to connect with them and help them express themselves through music.
We want to make a human connection with them while singing and dancing to the most international language there is. The language of Music! Thanks to FundaMaya Canada, who have graciously allowed us into their community, we will be able to serve others. We are humbled and extremely grateful for all that FundaMaya has been able to do for the Mayan people in Guatemala.

Where will we be visiting?
We will be flying into La Aurora International Airport which serves Guatemala City and surrounding areas. From there we will board a one hour bus ride into Antigua, Guatemala for the night. The next morning we will be boarding a bus for a 3 hour scenic ride heading into Panajachel, Guatemala and arriving at Lake Atitlan.
Once we arrive and have settled in we will be introduced to the incredible staff at FundaMaya. They will take us to the preschools to meet with the children and begin our instruction and connection with them. Our family will also be helping out with their Elderly Care Program. It is our hope to volunteer at the Animal Rescue Center as well.
